Synex Energy was established in 1984 to meet the needs of businesses and communities that required technical and financial assistance to develop energy projects. The range of projects includes hydropower, diesel generation, powerlines, utility operation and cogeneration and thermal facilities.
The origin of the Company can be traced to the high-energy prices of the early 1980's and the Federal Government initiative (the Remote Community Demonstration Program) which was established to identify and assist remote communities with energy problems. It soon became apparent that many communities had viable energy supply options but that financing of such projects was beyond the capability of the communities and traditional sources of funding. A company with technical expertise, access to capital markets and the stability to undertake long-term projects was required. This was accomplished in mid 1985 with the formation of Synex International Inc, which had capital, technical and managerial expertise combined in several affiliated companies, one of which was Synex Energy Resources Ltd. More recently the growing trend of the major utilities to plan for future resources, using a mix of independent and utility owned generation, provides opportunities to develop a wider selection of projects.
The Company now owns and operates 4MW of hydroelectric capacity in British Columbia.
Synex Energy has previously developed, owned and operated hydroelectric plants - most notably the Brown Lake Hydroelectric Plant (a 7MW plant near Prince Rupert, British Columbia) and 4 hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 11MW along the Tittabawasse River in Michigan - has been involved in the leasing and operation of electrical grid connections, including the Holberg Grid Connection (a 50 km powerline located at the north end of Vancouver Island) and has had a financial or operating interest in three diesel powered electrical utilities at Kwadacha, Tsay Keh and Field, BC.
